History Of Nagarjuna Sagar :
In earlier days, Nagarjuna Sagar was called as Vijayapuri, which means ‘The city of Victory’. The current name ‘Nagarjuna Sagar’ is named after the most respected Buddhist monk ‘Nagarjuna’ who lived in 2nd century AD. It is also a place of extensive archaeological importance and the craters reveal that this was the main place in South India for promoting the Buddhist teachings during 3rd century AD.It was ruled by Sathavahanas followed by Ikshvaku rulers in ancient times.
It is a birthplace of one of the ancient river valley civilizations.Raved by the pleasant surroundings of this place, Buddhist made this land a great learning hub, organizing one of the four major Viharas here.It was also a capital of South Indian Hindu Kingdom, Ikshvakus. Now Nagarjuna Sagar is one of the tallest dams in India.
